Garage Door Maintenance
To prolong the life and reliability of your garage door, it is advised to check it on a reasonably regular basis. If the door is quite exposed to the elements or it is opened and closed many more times than usual, it may need more regular servicing. If the equipment being used is more protected and less exposed, then it can be less frequent. But garage door maintenance should not be ignored.
There are relatively simple things that can be done by yourself to keep your garage door looked after:
Inspect the garage door and surrounds for excessive dust or anything that may cause any type of obstruction. Listen for unusual noise when opening or closing the door. If you hear anything out of the ordinary, ascertain the exact location where it is originating from.
In most cases a simple wipe with a cloth and lubrication will solve the problem and do the trick. However, if it does not and it appears a little more complicated, then give Hollington Doors a call. One of our team of specialists will no doubt sort it out whilst giving it a service if required.
In any case, you can help stop this sort of thing from happening. It is advisable to use a good quality lithium based grease to lubricate all the moving parts of the machinery. Include the hinges and garage torsion springs at least every six months. Do not use WD40. Even though oil can be used, it is more liable to attract excess dust or dirt.
Do not smother them to the point where the fluid is dripping from them. Oil is more likely to do this whereas grease or lube will not. Bear in mind that anything plastic or nylon does not need lubricating. It may even have an adverse effect after a period of time and cause unnecessary damage.
Do not use any lubricant on the tracks. Just wipe and clean them with a damp cloth. Remove any particles of dust, dirt, etc. that you may come across.
If your garage door is operated electronically as most of our doors now are, it would prove prudent to keep spare batteries for any remote controls that are used for when they might be needed. They are simple enough to replace, but will probably become increasingly frustrating if they are not changed in good time.
If your electric garage door is not working at all, the first thing to check will be for any fuse associated with it. This may be located in the plug, wall socket or within the main fuse box. It could also be another electrical item within the property that the same fuse is also connected to. That would cause the fuse to blow and stop any power getting to your garage door.
